Medical Abortion in Singapore

The Abortion Pill in Singapore:

An Option for Termination of Early Pregnancy

For pregnancies in the early stages, the abortion pill can be an option under medical supervision. Surgical abortion may be more suitable for pregnancies beyond the early weeks. Medical abortion is usually considered up to around 7 weeks of gestation.

The procedure uses two medications, mifepristone (Mifegyne) and misoprostol (Cytotec), taken at different times to safely end the pregnancy. In Singapore, these medications are strictly regulated under the Termination of Pregnancy Act and can only be provided by a licensed abortion clinic. They are not available over the counter.

No surgery or anaesthesia is required, and the process can feel similar to a miscarriage. For those who meet the eligibility criteria, it is generally a more affordable option than surgical abortion.

Mifepristone (Mifegyne)

Mifepristone is the first medication taken during a medical abortion. It works by blocking progesterone, a hormone needed to maintain the uterine lining in early pregnancy. When progesterone is blocked, the pregnancy cannot continue and the uterine lining begins to break down.

Misoprostol (Cytotec)

Taken 24 to 48 hours after mifepristone, misoprostol causes the uterus to contract, leading to cramping and bleeding that expels the pregnancy tissue. This process is similar to a heavy period or early miscarriage. With proper medical supervision, it is generally effective for early pregnancies.

For women seeking early pregnancy termination, rest assured that the procedure will be carried out with utmost privacy and sensitivity, all while ensuring safety and efficiency.

Is The Abortion Pill Suitable for You?

The Medical abortion can be a safe and effective option depending on:

Gestational Age

When used in the early stages of pregnancy, typically up to seven weeks, medical abortion can terminate the pregnancy safely and effectively (with proper medical supervision). Beyond this timeframe, it will be in the patient’s best interest to undergo a surgical abortion instead.

Existing Health Conditions

Having certain medical disorders, such as severe anaemia, adrenal failure or known allergies to any of the abortion pills used, may impact one’s eligibility for the procedure.

With proper supervision by our experienced gynaecologist, medical abortion can be a safe procedure with effective results.

What Does Medical Abortion Involve?

1

Consultation & Assessment

Our gynaecologist will conduct a detailed review, where ultrasound scans and blood tests are taken to assess your stage of pregnancy and medical history, so as to determine your eligibility for medical abortion.

2

Mandatory Counselling

Upon assessment by the gynaecologist, you will be required to undergo a pre-abortion counselling and a 48-hour waiting period before the abortion can take place.

3

Administration of Pills

Once you decide to proceed with a medical abortion, our doctor will prescribe the medications to you, in which mifepristone (Mifegyne) will be taken first, followed by misoprostol 2 days later. This will be medically supervised and your doctor will ensure you are well-informed on what to expect subsequently.

4

The Medical Abortion Process

Cramping and bleeding are expected after taking the medications, signalling that the abortion is progressing. These should stop after a few days or weeks, and can be alleviated with painkillers. In the case of fever, persistent nausea, vomiting, excessive bleeding or if there is no bleeding within 24 hours of taking misoprostol, contact your doctor immediately.

5

Post-Abortion Follow-Up

Return to the clinic for follow-ups to ensure a safe recovery and complete abortion. Rest assured that our dedicated team is here to support you, ensuring your health and well-being throughout the process.

What Is Mifepristone (Mifegyne)?

Mifepristone (Mifegyne) is a medication used to end an early pregnancy in combination with another drug called misoprostol. It works by blocking progesterone, a hormone essential for pregnancy to progress. This method is known as a medical or medication abortion.

What Is Misoprostol (Cytotec)?

Misoprostol, also known as Cytotec, is used as the second medication after taking mifepristone to terminate an early pregnancy. It works by causing the uterus to contract and expel pregnancy tissue. This method, when used under medical guidance, is often successful in terminating early pregnancies.
