Welcome to the Women’s Clinic of Singapore

Led by experienced gynaecologist and abortion doctor Dr Jen Shek Wei, we understand that not all pregnancies may be welcomed, especially in cases of unwanted pregnancies due to financial constraints, health or relationship concerns. In such cases, a medically supervised abortion may be considered to end the pregnancy.

What are Your Options for Abortion?

There are two ways to end an unplanned pregnancy: medical (abortion pills) and surgical abortion. Both, when done under the care of an accredited gynaecologist for eligible patients, are safe and effective in terminating pregnancies.

However, it is important to note that abortion pills are not something to be taken without medical guidance. Supervision by a trained doctor helps reduce the risk of complications and ensures the procedure is carried out safely.

About the Abortion Pill

Termination of Pregnancy with Abortion Pill

Medical abortion in Singapore is regulated under the Termination of Pregnancy Act, which outlines strict guidelines on who can perform the procedure and where it can take place. The abortion pill is not available over the counter and must be prescribed and supervised by a licensed doctor.

People may consider a medical abortion for various reasons, including:

  • Unplanned or Unwanted Pregnancy

    – Some individuals may not feel ready emotionally, physically or socially to continue the pregnancy.
  • Social or Financial Challenges

    – Life circumstances such as financial strain, unstable living conditions or limited support may influence decisions..
  • Health Concerns

    – Continuing a pregnancy may pose risks to physical or mental well-being in certain situations, and doctors may advise termination as a safer option.

Abortion Pill and Surgery Eligibility

Abortion in in Singapore can only be performed by a licensed medical practitioner in an approved institution. At our clinic, the abortion pill can be an option during early pregnancy, ideally within the first seven weeks.

Under the Termination of Pregnancy Act, eligibility usually includes:

  • Residential Status: The patient must be a Singapore citizen, the spouse of a Singapore citizen, a holder of a valid employment pass or work permit, or have lived in Singapore for at least four months immediately before the procedure.
  • Gestational Limit: The pregnancy must be 24 weeks or less. Abortion beyond this point is generally not allowed except when it is urgently required to save the person’s life or prevent serious physical or mental harm.
  • Mandatory Counselling: Pre-abortion counselling is required at a certified clinic or approved medical facility to ensure the patient is fully informed.
  • Waiting Period: A 48-hour waiting period must be observed between the counselling session and the signing of written consent for the procedure.
  • Consent: Written consent must be given by the pregnant person. For unmarried individuals under 16, additional counselling at the Health Promotion Board is needed, and a Certificate of Attendance must be presented.

Termination may also be allowed when it is necessary to save the woman’s life or to prevent grave, permanent injury to her physical or mental health.

Throughout the process, the doctor will explain each step clearly and address any questions. Confidentiality and patient privacy are maintained at all times to provide a safe and respectful environment.

What to Expect After Taking the Abortion Pill

Knowing what to expect during recovery can help you feel better prepared for the days ahead. Here is what you may experience and how to care for yourself after the procedure:

  • Cramping and Bleeding

    – Some cramping and bleeding are normal and may last a few days to a few weeks as the body clears the pregnancy tissue.
  • Rest and Care

    – Pain relief and any prescribed medications can help manage discomfort, while getting enough rest and following your doctor’s instructions supports a more comfortable and safe healing process.
  • Activity Restrictions

    – Avoid strenuous exercise and sexual intercourse until your doctor confirms it is safe to resume normal activities. Allowing your body time to recover helps prevent complications.
  • Follow-up Care

    – Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments. These visits allow your abortion doctor to check your recovery, ensure the process is complete and address any concerns you may have.
  • Emotional Support

    – It is common for people to experience a range of emotions during and after the process. Feeling relief, sadness or uncertainty is normal. Talking with trusted friends or family can help, and professional counselling is available if you would like extra guidance or support.

Should you find yourself in an unplanned pregnancy and considering abortion, our clinic offers safe, discreet and affordable abortion services.
